Introduction
The current observation
of Greenery Day as a public
holiday in Japan stems from the
celebration of the birthday of
Emperor Showa (Hirohito, who
lived from 1901 to 1989).
Observing Greenery Day
On this day, many botanical (plant) and Japanese gardens are open to the public throughout Japan. People also use this time to
commune with nature. Because it lengthens Golden Week, many people will use the time to take their vacations or to take an
extended trips. Many places in Japan will also offer free admission to the public. This includes the Ueno Zoo, Rikugien Garden,
and Kiyosumi Garden.

Origins Of The Day
Japan celebrated the first Greenery Day on April 29, 1989. In the past, April 29 was
celebrated as Tenno Tanjoubi, a public holiday dedicated to the current emperor's
birthday.
After Emperor Akihito ascended to Chrysanthemum
Throne and succeeded Emperor Showa, Tenno Tanjoubi
shifted to his birthday.
When Did Greenery
Day Start? Greenery Day is observed as a day to

appreciate nature and be grateful for

its blessings. It was initially

established in 1989 and held annually

on April 29 to celebrate the birthday

of Emperor Showa (also known as

Emperor Hirohito).
On this day, commemorative

plantings of trees are held around

the country, as are many events

that bring people closer to nature.
