Since. the mid-1990s, systems that
have been published have been based
on the classification of Cactaceae. The
family has been roughly split into 125–
130 genera and 1,400–1,500 species
by treatments in the twenty-first
century. These species are then
organized into several tribes and
subfamilies

• Stems flattened, jointed, succulent,
apparently leafless
• Flowers large, usually solitary,
hermaphrodite, epigynous
• Tepals indefinite with gradual transition
from sepals to petals, stamens indefinite,
Carpels syncarpous, ovary inferior
unilocular, parietal placentae
• Fruit - berry.

celled, basifixed, introrse; longitudinally dehiscent.

• Two or many carpels, syncarpous;
• Ovary inferior, unilocular,
numerous anatropous ovules;
• Parietal placentation, very rarely
basal placentation;
• Style 1 and simple; stigmas often as
many as the carpels.

Many seeded berry.

Seed:
Scanty or no endosperm

Pollination:
Entomophilous.
