LESSON 2

Managing a Research Project

At the end of this lesson, we can able to:

1. Prepare a plan and focus on

issues and ideas in a given field
of study
2. Prepare a research project framework.
3. Understand the facets of managing a
research project.
4. Acquire working knowledge on result-based
management in planning for an inquiry.
5. Use results-based framework as a tool in
monitoring and evaluating an inquiry.
Introduction to Results-based Management (
RBM

 Is adopted by most
research-funding institutions
in assessing research
proposals.
RBM

Allows you to develop a well-

planned research.
In the RBM context,
consider the following
guide questions:
1.What research question are you trying
to address?
2.What is the foreseeable impact of the
research project?
3.What are the possible outcomes
generated at the completion of the
research study?
4.What are the expected output and
deliverables?
5.How long will the research
undertaking take?
6. What objectives should you meet to
ensure that the research question will
be answered?
7. What necessary inputs and specific
activities must be undertaken to
successfully meet these objectives?
8. What is the projected duration for
each individual activity?
9.Who will be responsible for data
collection?
10. When will be the data collected?
LOGICAL FRAMEWORK OF RBM

Inputs or Investments or Resources
While conducting an inquiry, the RBM
framework offers the following
advantages:
1. Focused managing
brought about by careful
and deliberate planning
2. Precise assessment
leading to prompt
identification and
resolution of problems.
3. Documented support
to beneficiaries

4. Well-Spent funds
How to prepare an RBM-based
Research Framework

1. Outcomes

2. Performance indicators
3. Data collection Methods

4. Baseline data
RING AND EVALUATION OF RESEARC

1. CONTROL
2. PROGRESS REPORT
3. EVALUATION
ACTIVITY
PRACTICE:

Reflect on your New Year’s resolution. Were you able to

achieve the desired outcome?, If yes, What were the
performance indicators that told you that you have
successfully achieved the target outcome?.
ENRICHMENT: Real life application

Suppose the Swedish International Development Agency

(SIDA) posted an announcement for research proposals for
funding next year. As set by SIDA, submitted proposals
should cover any of the following topics/themes:
•Environment
•Natural resources
•Energy
•Social corporate responsibility
•Anti-corruption
The goals shall involve any of the following:
1.Eradication of poverty in developing countries
2.Generation of new knowledge/information relevant to developing countries
3.Building research capability in developing countries.
Proposals must follow the RBM logical framework. Assume you are the
director of the Office for Sustainable research and development of a
prestigious university. You have been assigned by the executive vice
president for academic affairs to prepare and submit a proposal in RBM
format, compelling enough that you will be able to get a favorable
assessment from SIDA’s screening committee to support the proposed
research project. As the proposal is in RBM format, it will be evaluated based
on the following:
1. The impact of the proposed research problem
2. SMART objectives and outcomes
3. Well defined outputs
4. Extensive data sources and data collection strategies
5. Reasonable assumptions and
6. Ingenious performance indicators

those plans?
