Chapter I

Education for a Fast Changing World

Introduction
• Electronic waste, or e-waste, is a global issue that has significant
environmental impact, particularly for landfills and potential health
hazards. E-waste is a type of waste generated from discarded
electronic devices such as computers, smartphones, and
televisions, and it contains hazardous materials such as lead,
cadmium, and mercury that can contaminate soil and water,
causing harm to both the environment and human health (Wang &
Chen, 2018). According to the Global E-waste Monitor 2020
report, the world generated 53.6 million metric tonnes of e-waste
in 2019, with only 17.4% properly collected and recycled (Baldé et
al., 2020).

Education for a Fast Changing World

Introduction
• The electronic waste or e-waste has become a major global problem, as the
increase in electronic devices usage and the short lifespan of these devices lead
to environmental degradation and health risks. In the Philippines, e-waste
management is a significant challenge due to the lack of awareness, inadequate
regulations, and limited facilities for proper disposal. This capstone project aims
to address these issues by developing a web application for e-waste donation in
Lipa City.

• The purpose of this project is to provide a platform for the citizens of Lipa City
to donate their e-waste in an eco-friendly manner, reducing the amount of e-
waste that ends up in landfills or improperly disposed of. By doing so, we aim
to help the city in its efforts towards a more sustainable and environmentally
conscious community.

Education for a Fast Changing World

Objectives of the Study
1.2 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
1.2.1 General Objective
• The main objective of this study is to develop a web application that
facilitates e-waste donation in Lipa City and promotes responsible e-waste
disposal.

1.2.2 Specific Objectives

The specific objectives of the study are:
• To develop a user-friendly web application for convenient e-waste
donation.
• To provide educational resources to raise awareness on carbon footprint
and responsible e-waste disposal.

Education for a Fast Changing World

Objectives of the Study

• To provide a tool for monitoring user behavior in terms of e-waste

management.

• To Adhere to the ISO/IEC 2510 software evaluation standards in

developing the web application, which include:
Functional Suitability;
Performance Efficiency;
Compatibility;
Usability;
Security;
Maintainability; and
Portability

Education for a Fast Changing World

Scope, Limitations and Delimitations of the Study

• Planet HERO accepts e-waste from individuals and small

organizations in Lipa City, Philippines via the web app.
Large organizations cannot donate due to logistical and
financial limits. Focuses on donation request and approval,
with limitations including carbon footprint and
technical/financial constraints for web app development.
The study assesses the web app's impact on responsible e-
waste disposal and carbon footprint in Lipa City.
Planet HERO facilitates e-waste donation. The app aim to
manage personal e-waste by donating for reuse, but not
eliminate all e-waste.

Significance (or Importance) of the Study
The purpose of this project is to provide a platform for the citizens of Lipa City to
donate their e-waste in an eco-friendly manner, reducing the amount of e-waste that
ends up in landfills or improperly disposed of. By doing so, we aim to help the city in
its efforts towards a more sustainable and environmentally conscious community.
• 1.3.1 To the current system developers. Data and Computed Carbon Footprint of
donation App can be a monotonous task for developers. The proposed system can
help current developers to lessen their job on manually computing and donating e-
waste.
• 1.3.2 To the end users. Having an accurate data information from the donor to
new system application can significantly improve reliability of the system. The end
users or Donor will not be hard to donate the e-waste.
• 1.3.3 Lipa City Community can learn about the importance of proper e-waste
disposal and recycling, participate in community involvement and environmental
advocacy, and contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment

Synthesis
• The related literature provides an in-depth overview
of e-waste management practices and the challenges
faced by different countries and regions in managing
e-waste. The literature emphasizes the need for
effective e-waste management practices that prioritize
sustainability, such as recycling, recovery of valuable
materials, and eco-design. It also highlights the need
for a comprehensive e-waste management plan that
includes policies and regulations, capacity building,
public awareness, and technological innovation.

Education for a Fast Changing World

Synthesis
• Bautista and Espejo (2018) and Arora and Singh (2019) stress the
importance of a comprehensive e-waste management plan for the
Philippines, including policies, capacity building, public awareness,
technological innovation, and a regulatory framework with extended
producer responsibility, waste segregation, and proper disposal methods.
Jimenez et al. (2021) propose an e-waste framework for UST emphasizing
proper management in educational institutions and suggesting a system for
collection, segregation, and disposal in line with regulations and best
practices.

Education for a Fast Changing World

Synthesis
• E-Waste was compared to concepts, literature, and
systems by the researcher to understand migration
better. Using past research, the current study
improves. Web apps for e-waste management offer
convenience for donors and better device
refurbishment and distribution. Web apps for e-waste
management face challenges such as security
measures and distributing refurbished devices
(Chavan & Sharma, 2018).

Subject of the Study
• The subject of the study is the target end-users of the
Planet HERO web application in Lipa City towards
green computing, which includes households and
businesses that generate electronic waste. The study
involves the collection of data from a sample of the
target users through the survey questionnaire. The
sample size is determined using a formula based on
the population size and margin of error.

Data Gathering Instrument
•Projective Data Gathering - This data gathering
method is an indirect interview used when potential
respondents know why they're being asked questions
and hesitate to answer. In this method, the complete
objective of the interview is not disclosed to the
respondent, hence, a truer, most accurate answers
may be collected. Opinions, feelings, and attitude of
the respondent are vital in this method.

Education for a Fast Changing World

Data Gathering Procedures
• Interviewees were asked how they dispose of their electronic waste. All the
respondents responded that they just threw them away.
• Interviewees were asked if they are willing to donate their electronic waste.
All respondents responded positively.
• Interviewees were asked if they know of any application for electronic
waste donation. All respondents replied “No”.
• Interviewees were asked their thoughts of having a donation app where
they can offer their e-waste to someone for recycling or possible proper
disposal. Respondents were positive of the idea.
• They suggested that it will be better if their e-waste donation will be
picked up instead of Interviewees shared that they have no idea how to
properly dispose of their e-waste nor where to dispose them. Most of the
respondents do not even know that these wastes can cause harm to the
environment and proper disposing of these wastes may reduce Carbon
Dioxide Emission.
