ADVMTH4

An equation is a
statement of equality
between two given
expressions
ADVMTH4

TYPES OF
EQUATION
ADVMTH4

1. IDENTITY EQUATION – two sides of the equation are

equal whatever value is assigned to x.

2. CONDITIONAL EQUATION – equation which is true or

equal for a certain value of x.
ADVMTH4

OTHER TERMS TO CONSIDER

Root of Equation
- values that make the equation true

Solution set
- the set of replacements for the variable that yields a true
statement for the equation

Solving equation
- process of finding the roots
ADVMTH4

Determine if the given equation is an identity or

conditional.

3.
ADVMTH4

Linear Equations

It can be written in the form ax + b = 0,

where a and b are real numbers. The only
power of the variable is 1.
ADVMTH4

LINEAR EQUATIONS IN ONE UNKNOWN

Solve for the unknown in the following equations.

1. 4x – 3 = 3x - 5

2. 7x – (3x + 7) = 21
3.
ADVMTH4

LINEAR EQUATIONS IN TWO

UNKNOWNS
ax + by + c = 0

In the form above, a, b, and c are constant and not equal

to zero. Two linear equations in two variables considered
together form a system of linear equations in two variables.

LINEAR EQUATIONS IN TWO

UNKNOWNS
TYPES OF SOLUTION OF SYSTEMS OF EQUATION

1. Consistent – the graphs of two equations are two lines intersecting in

one point. It has at least one solution.
2. Inconsistent – the graphs of two equations are parallel lines. The
system has no solution.
3. Dependent – the graph of two equations are on the same line and there
are infinitely many solutions.
ADVMTH4

Given the system

01 If , the system is consistent and their graphs intersect at one point.

02 If , the system is inconsistent and has no solution and their graphs are
parallel

03 If , the system is dependent and their graphs coincide.
