EARTHQUAKE

WHAT IS
EARTHQUAKES
-Is the sudden release of
strain energy in the
Earth’s crust ,resulting in
waves of shaking that
radiate outwards from
the earthquake source
TYPES OF
EARTHQUAKES.

-Tectonic, Volcanic
Earthquake
Tectonic Earthquake
Produced by sudden movements along faults and plate boundaries.
Volcanic Earthquake
Caused by the movement of magma beneath the Earth.
Effects of
Earthquake.
Earthquakes can result in the ground
shaking, soil liquefaction, landslides,
fissures, avalanches, fires, and tsunamis.
The extent of destruction and
harm caused by the
Earthquake depends on its
magnitude. Intensity and
duration.
Magnitude Intensity,
Duration.
Magnitude is a measure of earthquake
size and remains unchanged with distance
from the earthquake. Intensity, however,
describes the degree of shaking caused by
an earthquake at a given place and
decreases with distance from the
earthquake epicenter. Duration is the time
of the earthquakes that may last minutes
or seconds.

How is an earthquake
measured?
A seismograph is the primary
earthquake measuring
instrument.
The seismograph produces a digital
graphic recording of the ground
motion
caused by seismic waves.
Can we prevent
earthquake?
We cannot prevent natural
earthquakes from occurring but
We can significantly mitigate their
effects by identifying hazards,
building safer structures, and
providing education on
earthquake safety.
CONCLUSION
Earthquakes shake the
ground surface and can cause
buildings to collapse, disrupt
transport and services, and
can cause fires.
