INDIGENOUS COSMETICS

They are also called traditional cosmetics. These


are naturally occurring cosmetics. Some of them
were used in the past to improve appearance.
They include: Tiro (Yoruba), Tanjore (Igbo), and
eye make-up (English): It can be ground into
very smooth black powder

AGENDA
TIRO (YOURBA)
Tiro is a culturally significant cosmetic used for facial
ornamentation. Tiro is crafted from a base material
known as galena, a significant metallic mineral and a
vital commercial ore for lead and silver. It is
particularly among the Yoruba ethnic group. This
practice, dating back many years, has been embraced
by both men and women but gained widespread
popularity during the 19th century.
UHE (IGBO)
• This is a redwood that can be thoroughly ground into a fine powder. It
can also be made into a paste by mixing the powder with a little water
and palm oil. It can be used on the face or entire body. It is said to
have a smoothening effect on the skin. I
URI (IGBO)

•This is a special body


paint made from bark,
seeds, or roots of
certain trees. It also has
some medicinal effects.
LALLE
•This is a special make-up from the leaves of a special tree. The
leaves are ground into a paste and mixed with lemon juice or lime
juice. It is commonly used by ladies in the Northern parts of
Nigeria to paint their fingers and toe nails as the outline of the
hands and feet.

MODERN COSMETICS
•Most cosmetics that are found in the market nowadays are
prepared in large quantities industrially and are made up of a
combination of chemicals in different proportions depending on
the type of product being prepared e.g. skin-care preparations;
foundation, face powder, and rouge (blusher); eye make up;
lipstick; shampoo; hair curling and straightening preparations;
hair colors, dyes, and bleaches; and nail polish.
LIPSTICK
•Itis a colored cosmetic applied to the lips from a small solid
stick. It is a product used to apply coloration and texture to lips,
often made of wax and oil. A coloured substance that is put on the
lips to improve or change their colour
FACE POWDER
•A flesh-tinted cosmetic powder used to improve the appearance
of the face by reducing shine and concealing blemishes. It is used
to set makeup, brighten the skin, and contour the face. They come
in two main types. One of which is loose powder, which is used
to assist with oily skin in absorbing excess moisture and
mattifying the face to reduce shininess
NAIL POLISH
•Varnish applied to the fingernails or toenails to color them or
make them shiny. It is a lacquer that can be applied to the human
fingernails or toenails to decorate and protect the nail plates.A
polish of quick-drying lacquer, either clear or coloured used to
paint the fingernails or toenails.
SHAMPOO
•A liquid preparation containing detergent or soap for washing the
hair. It is a hair care product, typically in the form of a viscous
liquid, that is used commonly for cleaning the hair.
ROUGE(BLUSHER)
•Itis a cosmetic for coloring the cheeks in a variety of shades, or
the lips red. It is applied as a powder, cream, or liquid. It is found
in shades of pink and red.
