What is a Sentence?
• A sentence is an independent clause that consists of
a group of any number of words expressing a
complete thought. It contains a subject and verb and
can be a long sentence or as short as a one-word
statement.
Basic Sentence Elements
Independent clause
- An independent clause can stand alone as a sentence. It
contains a subject and a verb and has a complete idea.
Example:
1. I like spaghetti.
• If a sentence begins with a dependent clause, note the comma after this clause.
If, on the other hand, the sentence begins with an independent clause, there is
not a comma separating the two clauses.
Examples:
1. Although she completed her literature review, she still needed to work on her
methods section.
2. Because he organized his sources by theme, it was easier for his readers to
follow.
3. They studied APA rules for many hours as they were so interesting.
4. We missed our plane because we were late.
5. Our dog barks when she hears a noise.
