Design, cost analysis and

economic impact of cable-
stayed bridges in
infrastructure and urban
development in their
surroundings as compared
to concrete girder bridges
Introduction
• Cable-stayed bridges are known for their elegant design
and efficient structural system, making them ideal for
spanning long distances and overcoming geographical
barriers.
• In an era of urbanization and transportation expansion,
cable-stayed bridges play a pivotal role in connecting
communities and fostering economic activities. This
presentation explores the design and economics of a cable-
stayed bridge at Kaak Pull, Pakistan, emphasizing cost
analysis and its transformative impact on infrastructure and
urban development.
Literature Review
• Design:
• Introduction to cable-stayed bridges and their design principles.
• Structural efficiency, load distribution, material innovation, pylon design, cable arrangement, and bridge
deck materials according to AASHTO standards
• AASHTO Standards for Cable-Stayed Bridges:-
• LRFD Bridge Design: Guidelines for load factors, resistance factors, and analysis.
• Pedestrian Bridge Design: Specifications for safe and accessible pedestrian-friendly designs.
• Bridge Construction: Requirements for materials and quality control.
• Seismic Design: Guidelines for earthquake resistance.
• Pedestrian Facilities: Recommendations for pedestrian-friendly designs.
Literature Review
• Economic Growth
• Cable-stayed bridges serve as catalysts for economic growth, attracting businesses, encouraging
investment, and stimulating local economies.
• The improved connectivity brought about by cable-stayed bridge construction facilitates the flow of
goods and services, increasing trade opportunities and fostering commercial activities.
• The presence of a cable-stayed bridge often leads to the development of new business districts,
industrial zones, and tourism hubs, generating employment opportunities and driving economic
prosperity.
Literature Review
• Urban Expansion and Development
• Bridge construction often acts as a catalyst for urban expansion and development.
• The presence of a bridge can lead to the growth of new neighborhoods, commercial areas, and public
spaces.
• It opens up previously inaccessible or underdeveloped areas, attracting investment, and fostering urban
revitalization.
• Infrastructure Development
• Bridge construction projects often trigger the development of supporting infrastructure.
• The construction of a bridge necessitates the improvement or construction of roads, utilities, and public
amenities in the surrounding area.
• This infrastructure development enhances the overall functionality and attractiveness of the region,
benefiting both residents and businesses.
Enhanced Transportation Network
• Cable-stayed bridges contribute to the development
of a robust and efficient transportation network.
• With their sleek design and ability to span long
distances, cable-stayed bridges provide alternative
routes and reduce congestion on existing roadways.
• These bridges improve traffic flow, alleviate strain
on transportation infrastructure, and enhance the
overall efficiency of the transportation network,
benefiting both commuters and businesses.
Scope and limitations
• The scope of the work is limited to the design and
cost analysis of cable-stayed bridge (only
superstructure) and then impact of such a proposed
structure on infrastructure and urban development of
the area and Tourism, when compared to concrete
girder bridge.
