Active Band stop filter

Band Reject / Band Eliminator

Objective and Outcomes
• Objective – to make familiarize the concept of
Band Reject/ band stop/ band eliminate filter.
• Outcomes- After the end of this lecture you will
come to know..
1. What is BRF?
2. Draw the frequency response of BRF.
3. Cutoff frequencies of BRF.
4. Application of BRF.
5. Relation of circuit components with BW, Q and Fr.
BRF Definitions and Applications
• BRF is a band stop filter, which eliminate the certain band
of frequency signals and allows to pass the remaining
frequency signals.
• Applications
– Public address system to ensure good quality audio.
– Line noise reduction in telephony.
– To remove 50Hz /60Hz humming noise present in power
supply.
– Image and signal processing
– Radio communication.

Types of BRF
• Based on quality factor there are two types

– Wide band reject filter Q <10.

– Narrow band reject filter Q >= 10
Q is quality factor Q= Fr/BW
Fr is a center freq. = sqrt(FL.FH) and
BW is Bandwidth = (FL - FH)
Types of BRF

Numerical

Find out the values of cut off frequencies and pass-band

gain of the filter?
Numericals
• Design a BRF. FH=1Khz FL=10Khz and pass
band gain is 3.
Twin T Notch filter
Narrow band reject Filter is called Notch filter
Active Twin T Notch filter

The center frequency Fr = 1/2πRC

Gain = Vo/Vin
= (1-sqr(ω/ ωo))/(1-sqr(ω/ ωo)=4jsqr(ω/ ωo)(1-α)
Numericals
• Calculate the values of twin T components in
1KHz active notch filter.
