REPORT
GETTING INFORMATION FROM THE
INTERNET
• Many people find the Internet to be a convenient
place to find information and this is true since you can
find a multitude of information without even leaving
your room.
• It is important to remember that the information found
in the internet is not always reliable.
• This is because unlike books and other library
materials, the information has not been systematically
organized or verified
EVALUATING THE ACCURACY OF GIVEN
INFORMATION

• Regardless of what kind of sources you

find for your paper, you must learn to
critically evaluate the accuracy and
credibility of the information that you
find. To assess credibility and accuracy,
you must ask the following questions:
EVALUATING THE ACCURACY OF GIVEN
INFORMATION
• Who is the author? – credible sources are those
originating from authors respected in their fields and
who will properly cite their sources.
• When was it written? – aside form historical
information that does not usually get outdated, more
recent information is typically better than older
counterparts.
• What is the author’s purpose for the text? – is the text
an objective presentation of the topic or is it a
persuasive or even marketing text?
GATHERING DATA USING DIFFERENT
KINDS OF NOTES
• Follow these suggestions as you gather information
for your report:
1. Skim through each article or book you find to see if
it contains the information you need.
2. Carefully read the parts you want to remember.
Make brief notes on the points you want to include
in you report.
THERE ARE 2 KINDS OF NOTES – THE SUMMARY
AND THE DIRECT QUOTATION
1. Summary – you will jot down in your own words, as
briefly as possible, the gist of what you read use
abbreviations to save time.
2. Direct quotation – you will present the writer’s idea
just as he or she expressed it. You will need to record
his/her exact words, in quotation marks, to show that
you are quoting him or her. If you are not copying all
the words in a sentence, use three dots (…) to show
that you omitted. Use four dots (….) if the omitted part
is at the end of the sentence.
IN EVERY CASE, YOUR NOTE CARD
MUST CLEARLY SHOW THE EXACT
SOURCE OF EACH BIT OF BORROWED
MATERIAL, SUMMARY, OR DIRECT
QUOTATION. YOU WILL NEED TO
SHOW NOT ONLY THE TITLE AND
AUTHOR, BUT THE EXACT PAGE AS
WELL.
