Direct Variation
Definition:

y varies directly as x means that y = kx where y

is the dependent variable, x is the independent
variable and k is the constant of variation.
In other words:
* As x increases in value, y increases or
* As x decreases in value, y decreases.

Using Direct Variation to find
unknown
1. If y varies directly as x, and y = 9 when x = -15. Find y
when x = 21.
STEP 1: Translate into mathematical equation STEP 4: Solve for unknown
x = 21, y = ?
y = kx

STEP 2: Find the constant of variation y=

y = 9 and x = -15
y=
k=
y= or y = 12.6
STEP 3: Create an equation
k = - 3/5
y = x or y =
2. Given that y varies directly with x, and y = 28 when
x=7, Find x when y = 52.
TRY THIS:
1. Given that y varies directly with x, and y = 3 when x = 9,
Find y when x = 40.5.
1. Find the constant variation.
k = y/x or k = 3/9 = 1/3
k = 1/3
2. Equation: y=1/3x
3. Use y = 1/3x. Find the unknown (y).
y = (1/3)40.5
y= 13.5
ANSWER:
y = 13.5
TRY THIS:
2. Given that y varies directly with x, and y = 6 when x = -5, Find y
when x = - 8.
1. Find the constant variation.
k = y/x or k = 6/-5 = -1.2
k = -1.2
2. Equation: y=-6/5x or y=-1.2x
3. Use y = -1.2x. Find the unknown (y).
y= -1.2(-8)
x= 9.6

ANSWER:
y = 9.6

Problem:
A car uses 8 liters of gasoline to travel 160 km. How much gasoline will
the car use to travel 400 km?
Step One:
Find points in table

x (GAS) 8 ?
y(km) 160 400

Step Three: Use the equation

Step Two: Find the constant to find the unknown.
variation and equation: 400 = 20x
k = y/x or k = 160/8 or 20 400 = 20x
20 20
Equation: y = 20 x or x = 20 liters
Problem:
Julio’s wages varies directly as the number of hours that he works. If his
wage for 5 hours is P1000, how much will there be in 30 hours?

Step One: Find points in table.

X (hours) Y (wages)

5 1000
30 ?

Step Two: Find the constant

variation. Step Three:
Use the equation to find the unknown
k= y = 200x
k = = 200 y = 200(30)
y = 6000 or P6,000 wages
