Module 3:

Variations
(Part 2)
For students who got 0-3 in SW1, translate the following
statements into an equation.
1. The water bill B varies directly as the number
of cubic meters consumption c.
2. The volume V of a cylinder varies directly as
its height h.
3. The weight W of an object is directly
proportional to its mass m.
1. B = kc
2. V = kh
3. W = km
Objectives:

• Translate into variation statement a

relationship involving direct variation
between two quantities given by a table of
values, a mathematical equation and a
graph
• Find the unknown in a direct variation
equation
Remember:
 In a direct variation, one variable increases as the other
increases at a constant rate. Similarly, one variable decreases as
the other decreases.
 The variation equation is y = kx where k is the constant
variation.
 The ration of direct variation is always constant.
To determine whether a table of values or a graph is a
direct variation, solve for k using the formula:

Substitute each pair of coordinates or points to the

formula. All of the coordinates must have CONSTANT
RATIO.
Determine if the table expresses a direct variation between the variable. If
so, find the constant of variation and an equation that defines the relation

SOLVING DIRECT VARIATION

The constant of variation can be solved if one pair of

values x and y is known. From the resulting
equation, the other pairs having the same
relationship can be obtained.
Example 1: If y varies directly as x and y = 35
when x = 7, what is the value of y when x = 5?
