Events

During
Volcanic
Eruption
• Identify the important
Lesson events that happen
Objective when volcanoes erupt.
Volcanic Eruptions affect:
Global Temperature

Most of the particles spewed from

volcanoes cool the planet by shading
incoming solar radiation. The cooling
effect can last for months to years
depending on the characteristics of the
eruption.

People and Their Source of Living
Volcanic Eruptions affect:
Health
Volcanic Eruptions Advantages

• Fertile Soil
• Tourism
• Geothermal Energy
• Creation of new lands and building materials
Important Things to Remember

Silica -high silica content will

therefore exhibit greater degrees of
polymerization, and have higher
viscosities, than those with low-
silica contents.
Important Things to Remember

Phreatomagmatic
explosion –volcanic
eruption resulting from the
interaction of magma and
water.
Important Things to Remember

Phreatic eruption
–Eruptions that are driven by
steam explosions due to the
superheating of groundwater
by a magmatic source.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and
Seismology (PHIVOLCS) is a service institute of
the Department of Science and Technology (DOST)
that is principally mandated to mitigate disasters
that may arise from volcanic eruptions,
earthquakes, tsunami and other related geotectonic
phenomena.

What is Geothermal
Energy

Is a form of energy that comes from

Earth’s internal heat. This kind of
energy is considered renewable.
What is Geothermal
Energy
It comes from the word “GEO”
which means “from Earth” and
“THERMAL” means heat.
Trivia!
Did you know that the
Philippines is the world’s
third largest producer of
geothermal energy? This
thermal energy is used to
produce electricity.
Makban Geothermal
Powerplant

Located in Batangas.
Produces 458 MW output
capacity.
Tiwi Geothermal
Complex

Located in Albay. Produces

289 MW output capacity.
Maltibog Geothermal
Power Station

Located in Leyte. Produces

232.5 MW output capacity.
Ways to Harness
and Use
Geothermal Energy
1.Geothermal heat pumps- uses the heat
coming from close to Earth’s surface to
heat water.

2. Direct use- directly use water from hot

springs.

3. Generating electricity- use of

geothermal power plants.
How Geothermal
Powerplants Work
THREE TYPES OF
GEOTHERMAL
POWER PLANTS
The steam is drawn directly to
a turbine, which drives a
generator that produces
DRY electricity. After the steam
condenses, it is frequently
STEAM reinjected into the reservoir.
Flash steam plants take
high-pressure hot water
from deep inside the
FLASH earth and convert it to
STEAM steam that drives
generator turbines.
Transfer the heat from
geothermal hot water to
another liquid. The heat
BINARY causes the second liquid to
turn to steam, and the steam
CYCLE drives a generator turbine.
