LESSON 3: BASIC NAVIGATION AND
ZOOMING
OBJECTIVES

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to


navigate the Photoshop canvas and utilize
zooming tools effectively.

NAVIGATION TOOLS
• Hand Tool: Allows you to drag the canvas and navigate to different
areas of the image.
• Navigator Panel: Provides an overview of the entire image and allows
you to navigate quickly by clicking on the preview.

HAND TOOL – Pans over different parts of the
image.

ROTATE VIEW TOOL – Rotates the view of an


image.

ZOOMING TECHNIQUES
• Zoom Tool: Enables you to zoom in and out of specific areas of the
image.
• Shortcut Keys: Use "Ctrl" + "+" (Command + "+" on Mac) to zoom in
and "Ctrl" + "-" (Command + "-" on Mac) to zoom out. Use "Ctrl" + "0"
(Command + "0" on Mac) to fit the image to the screen.
PAN AND ZOOM TOGETHER
• Use the Hand Tool while holding the "Space" key to pan across the
image while zoomed in.

OVERVIEW OF THE CANVAS
• Familiarize yourself with the rulers at the top and left of the canvas,
which help in precise measurements and alignment.
• Check the status bar at the bottom to view the current magnification
and position of the cursor.

• Open an image in Photoshop and practice
using the navigation tools and zooming
techniques.
• Experiment with panning and zooming in and
out to understand how they affect your view
of the image.

• Find a detailed image online and practice
zooming in to focus on specific details. Use the
Hand Tool and the Navigator Panel to navigate
through different parts of the image.
