I CAN BE A WISE

CONSUMER
Objectives:
• Define consumer health.

• Discuss the importance of consumer

health.
• Describe a wise buyer and seller of
healthful products.
Do you remember the last time
you played grocery or tinda-
tindahan? Were you happier being
the seller, or the buyer? Having
your make-believe sari-sari store
or grocery store and using play
money is really fun! As a seller,
you think of what products you can
sell. As a buyer, you feel excited
because you can buy whatever you
like with your play money.
Now that you are a bit older, you
can see the similarities and
differences of your make-believe
sari-sari store or grocery store
from the real world. The choices
are still there, but this time you
have a lot more to choose from.
You still have money, but this time
you cannot easily spend it since
real money is something that your
parents and other family members
worked hard to earn.
CONSUMER,
CONSUMER HEALTH,
AND THE WISE
CONSUMER
Consumer health is the study
of products and services that
have an effect on your health
physically, psychologically, and
socially.
Consumer is a person who
chooses and uses products and
services. Medicines, food,
clothes, and other material
goods are examples of
products. Repairs, garbage
collection, and medical care
are examples of services.
If you are able to gather the
information you need about these
products and services, plus
carefully evaluate if they are true
and effective, you will be able to
make better decisions. Thus, you
will be a wise consumer. However,
if you will not look for facts and
do not double-check the claims
about these products and services,
you will end up Wasting time and
money. What is worse is that this
practice may even be harmful to
your health.
The Wise Sellers
The goal of any business is to make
money, but wise sellers should also strive
to give the buyers quality goods and
services to get their money's worth. You
can spot the wise sellers when you see and
experience how they go beyond just making
profits. They make sure they offer quality
products and provide efficient services.
They show that they are honest and fair
by giving accurate and complete
information, following the country's laws,
and being ready to entertain questions,
comments, and suggestions.
Traits of the Wise Buyer
• The wise buyer knows that health
products and services should be
used only when it is needed.
• The wise buyer also knows that
not all sellers are wise who will
give accurate information.
• The wise buyer will make sure to
evaluate the information to
separate which is fact and which
is fiction.
Can you give other traits of
the wise buyer and the wise
seller?
