What is it?
(Gayubas, Augusto, 2017)
It was a massacre perpetrated by
the Mexican government during
the repression deployed against
protesters gathered in the Plaza de
las Tres Culturas, on October 2,
1968.
What Happened?

(Trejo , 2023)
Deaths, origin and what happened on
October 2, 1968 The crime against
the students happened exactly ten
days before the opening of the 1968
Olympic Games in Mexico.
His afternoon, members of the Mexican
Army and a paramilitary group called
the 'Olimpia Battalion' used force to
once again repress and kill in cold
blood all the people present in the
square.
Why did the Tlatelolco Massacre
occur?
The last lawsuits presented by the
students, before the Mexican Army
and the paramilitary group Batallón
Olimpia murdered them, were due to
the military and police occupation of
school buildings with the justification
that there were students in fights.
Causes
(Editorial Etece, 2023)
• Inequality and lack of
representation. An extra factor
was that young middle class
students could not find a
representative

• Student confrontations. On July

22, 1968, students from the IPN
and the Isaac Ochoterena high
school confronted two porril
groups.
Causes
• International context. Outside, in
the world, students also led a series
of mobilizations.

• Cuba as north. It was inspiring for

young people as it was an example
that revolution was possible.
Consequences
(Gayubas, Augusto 2022)
1. The Mexican State carried out serious violations of the human
rights of the population, such as the following:
• Right to life
• Right to free expression
• Right to legal certainty

2. The Mexican government received strong social rejection.

3. Luis Echeverría made a series of internal changes and left the

officials identified as responsible for the student massacre out of
power.
Consequences
4. The Tlatelolco massacre put an end to the student conflict and did not
prevent the development of the Olympic Games.

5. In December, the National Strike Council was dissolved.

6. It led to the growth of citizen protest.

7. The Díaz Ordaz government was forced to take social measures and
grant the vote to all those over 18 years of age.
Who was in power
when it happened?
(Najar, Alberto, 2023)
A moment that explains the strong
reaction of the government of then
President Gustavo Díaz Ordaz.

It was that he covered up that group

that murdered the protesters with the
argument that their function was to
guard the Olympic Games facilities.
