Making a Table Strategy
Example: Andrew cashes a Php 1,800 check and wants the money in Php100 and
Php 200 bills. The bank teller gives him 12 bills. How many of each kind of bill does he
receive?

1. Understand the Problem

2. Devise a Plan

3. Carry the Plan

4. Review the Solution/ Look back

Make a table for analysis and for the solution

Andrew cashes a Php 1,800 check and wants the money in Php100 and Php 200
bills. The bank teller gives him 12 bills. How many of each kind of bill does he
receive?
Php 100 Php 200 Total Amount
12 0 Php 100(12) + Php 200(0) = Php 1200
11 1 Php 100(11) + Php 200(1) = Php 1300
10 2 Php 100(10) + Php 200(2) = Php 1400
9 3 Php 100(9) + Php 200(3) = Php 1500
8 4 Php 100(8) + Php 200(4) = Php 1600
7 5 Php 100(7) + Php 200(5) = Php 1700
6 6 Php 100(6) + Php 200(6) = Php 1800
5 7 Php 100(5) + Php 200(7) = Php 1900
4 8
3 9
2 10
1 11
0 12 Php 100(0) + Php 200(12) = Php 2400
In the previous slide, all the possible ways to get twelve bills of Php100 bills and Php 200
bills and the total amount of money for each possibility. The correct amount is given when
Andrew has six Php 100 bills and six Php 200 bills.

Answer: Andrew gets six Php 100 bills and six Php 200 bills.

Check: Six Php 100 bills and six Php 200 bills
→ 6(Php100) + 6(Php 200) = Php 600 + Php 1200 = Php 1800
The answer checks out.

Alternative strategy: Looking for a Pattern

Understand the Problem

Andrew gives the bank teller a Php1800 check. The bank teller gives Andrew 12
bills. These bills are a mix of Php100 bills and Php 200 bills. We want to know how many of
each kind of bill Andrew receives.
Php 100(12) + Php 200(0) = Php 1200
Php 100(11) + Php 200(1) = Php 1300
Php 100(10) + Php 200(2) = Php 1400

Every time we reduce the number of Php100 bills by one and increase the number of Php
200 bills by one, the total amount increases by Php100. The last entry in the table gives a
total amount of Php1400, so we have Php 400 to go until we reach our goal. This means that
we should reduce the number of Php 100 bills by four and increase the number of Php 200
bills by four. That would give us six Php 100 bills and six Php 200 bills.

6(Php 100) + 6(Php 200) = Php 600 + Php 1200 = Php 1800

Answer: Andrew gets six Php 100 bills and six Php 200 bills.
Alternative strategy: Using Variable

Andrew cashes a Php 1,800 check and wants the money in Php100 and Php 200
bills. The bank teller gives him 12 bills. How many of each kind of bill does he receive?

Let x be the number of Php 100 bill

y be the number of Php 200 bill

Make the equation

x + y = 12 --- 1st equation
100x + 200y = 1800 2nd equation
Solution:
100(12 - y ) + 200y = 1800
1200 – 100y + 200y = 1800
100y = 600 then y = 6
x + y = 12 --- 1st equation
from first equation substitute the value of y = 6
x + y = 12
x + 6 = 12
x = 12 - 6
x = 6

6(Php 100) + 6(Php 200) = Php 600 + Php 1200 = Php 1800

Answer: Andrew gets six Php 100 bills and six Php 200 bills.

3 shirts (pink, yellow and green) . How many different outfit combinations can she make?

Therefore, there are 9 different outfit combinations can Sarah’s make.

Assignment
1. Mang tomas owns goats and duck. Counting heads there are 39, counting legs there
are 110 legs. How many goats and how many ducks does Mang Tomas have?

2. Doug has 2 pairs of pants: a black pair and a green pair. He has 4 shirts: a
white shirt, a red shirt, a grey shirt, and a striped shirt. How many different
outfits can he put together?

3. Kevin has a rabbit, cat, a dog, and a turtle. He feeds them in a different order each

Draw a Diagram, Picture or Model
is one of the most helpful strategies for understanding a problem and
of obtaining ideas for a solutions. Learners represent a problem situation with
sketch drawing to help them see the relation ships and connections among the
components of the problems.

Example: Carmela celebrated her birthday party in a private home’s

poolside garden. It was attended by 30 persons. If each person shook hands with
each of the other exactly once, then how many handshakes took place.
Let use A, B, C, and D to represent Persons 1, 2, 3, and 4.

Two persons Three persons Four

Persons

A A B
Number of 2 3 4 5 n 30
persons
Number of 1 3 6 10 __ __
Handshakes

Based on the table the conjecture is

Number of handshakes = where n =
number of persons
Applying it to the required number of
handshakes
=
=
= 435
hand shakes
There were 435 handshakes which took
place in the party.
