CARBON

CYCLE
HARRISH VEJAYAN
 Carbon cycle involves the movement of carbon between the abiotic environment
and the organism.
 Many molecules such as carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and nucleic acid contains
carbon
 Carbon has many benefits to our planet:
• It helps to regulate Earth’s temperature
• It makes all living life possible
• It is a key element in the food that sustains us
• It provides a key source of the energy that fuels our economy
 Carbon is present in carbon dioxide which makes up about 0.04% of our
atmosphere. Other than that, carbon dioxide is dissolved in ocean and freshwater as
carbonate ion and bicarbonate ion. Besides that, carbon is found in limestone
(CaCo3).
 Photosynthesis in plants, algae and cyanobacteria incorporates co2 into organic
compounds (glucose). Plants synthesis cellulose, nucleic acid, starch and amino
acids.
 During cellular respiration by producers, consumers and decomposers, these
substances are used as fuel.
 Carbon dioxide returns into the atmosphere form organic form to inorganic form.
