“CARBON IS THE GLUE OF LIFE”

Carbon can be found in organic material, including the DNA, proteins, and other areas of the human
body. Some say that water is the key to life on our planet, and whilst this is partially true (as most life
on earth cannot survive without water!), carbon is also an essential tool for bonding the atoms
together. Carbon is present in all living matter such as animals, humans and plants and also in rocks.
However, carbon only makes up 0.025% of the Earth’s crust (according to science).
ALMOST A FIFTH OF YOUR BODY IS CARBON
Carbon makes up all life forms, and there is a huge variety in the substances that it makes, such
as fats and sugars. All living things are constructed on a foundation of carbon. The human body
consists of nearly 19% carbon (by weight). It can also be inorganic, it combines with oxygen and other
substances to make up sizable parts of the non-living world, like rocks and minerals.
CARBON LOVES TO BOND
Carbon can establish four bonds, which it does with many other elements, creating a multitude of
compounds, most of which we encounter regularly, including
plastics, medications, and fuels. Crucially these structures are both robust and adaptable.

Temperature
In the 21st century, the issue of global climate change has become the focus of attention of all
countries in the world. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) believes that the
increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration is the main cause of global climate change. The
current severe carbon emission situation is not achieved overnight, but is caused by the gradual
accumulation of carbon emissions in history, which is closely related to the rapid development of
modern industry since the Industrial Revolution (1850).
Diet
It can be said that carbon is the first step in the history of human civilization. From drinking blood to
cooked food is an important stage in the history of human development. Since humans evolved, they
first learned to eat plants as fuel for heating and cooking.

Activated Carbon
When carbon is treated with oxygen, it becomes highly porous and is called activated carbon. It can
then be used in chemical purification processes. Activated carbon can also be made using coconut
husks and a chemical process using phosphoric acid.
Carbon in Pigment
Carbon black is a power used to pigment many things, including mascara and eyeliner, printer ink, and
paints. Carbon black is used to produce paints with both conductive and non-conductive properties
and greater UV stability. Carbon black is made through the incomplete combustion of several
different raw products, including coal, vegetable matter, and petroleum products.

Carbon Capture and its Role in Energy Transition

Carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) is one of those critical technologies. Often called
carbon capture, it is the process of capturing carbon dioxide emissions from industrial facilities and
reusing or storing them, instead of releasing them into the atmosphere.
For heavy-emitting industries like power, steel, cement, oil and gas, and chemicals, carbon capture
has the potential to radically reduce environmental footprints, capturing more than 90% of carbon
dioxide emissions.
These industries play a key role in the energy transition, providing the energy and resources that our
world depends on to prosper while delivering lower-carbon steel products for wind turbines and solar
panels, as well as hydrogen and other renewable energy sources.
