Tasaday

The Tasadays, an ethnolinguistic group of the Lumads, are a small group of people, about two dozen, who live
within the cavernous and lush rain forests of Mindanao. They are believed to be descendants of the T’boli and
Manobo. They were originally identified as “Linat Batang.”

1976

President Marcos issued a decree “protecting the Tasaday and


other explored cultural communities from unauthorized entry”
and all visits ceased.

1986

The Swiss journalist Oswald Iten revisited the Tasaday.

1988

Philippine President Corazon Aquino declared that the


Tasaday were a “legitimate Stone Age tribe”.

ETHNOCULTURAL CHARACTERISTICS

Tasaday lived in caves, used stone axes, wore tiny leaf G-


strings, and ate only wild foods that they found in their forest
abode--roots, wild bananas, grubs, berries, and crabs and frogs
fished by hand from small streams.

The Tasaday were dressed only in loincloths and skirts made of


orchid leaves, used only crude stone tools (axes and scrapers)
and wooden implements (fire drills and digging sticks) and had
no weapons for hunting or war

• They speak a dialect of the Cotabato Manobo.

The cave site where they are said to have lived is located in
dense rain forest in South Cotabato Province in southern
Mindanao, at 6° 18′ N and 124°33′ E, at an elevation of
1,200 meters

Tiruray or teduray
The Tiruray or teduray are another distinct ethno-
linguistic group with clear proto-Malayan features.

Tiruray came from the combination of the words “Tiru”


meaning “place of origin, birth, or .residence” and ray
from “daya,” meaning “upper part of a stream or river.”
The Tiruray call themselves neither teduray or tiduray
People, but also classify themselves according to their
geographic location.

The word Teduray comes from the word Tew meaning


man and Duray referring to a small bamboo with a
hook and a line fishing instrument.

ETHNOCULTURAL CHARACTERISTICS

The primary livelihoods for coastal Tirurays are farming, hunting,


fishing, and basket weaving. Those who live in the mountains engage
in dry field agriculture, along with hunting and gathering forest
products. Tirurays are famous for their craftsmanship in weaving
baskets with two-toned geometric designs.
Dialect or language
Their distinct language is similarly structured to those of the
Malayo-Polynesian family but is unintelligible even to their
immediate neighbors.

Practice religion
Many Tirurays are Muslims and Christians, majority of their
population still believe and practice indigenous customs and
rituals.

Ethnoregional
The majority of Tiruray live in Upi, South Upo, Dinaig, and
Ampatuan in Maguindanao. Some are scattered in the
SOCCSKSARGEN region, particularly in Sultan Kudarat and
North Cotabato.
