Preliminary study Cooling tower

redundancy for yearly cleaning

J.Inigo-Golfin –LHC Risk Review March 5 th 2009

1
Proposals
1. Compensatory measures for suspension
of cooling tower cleaning in 2009-2010

2. Additional installation of a stand-by

cooling plant for cryo during annual
cleaning and maintenance
2
Compensatory measures for
suspension of cleaning
1. The proposed compensatory measures affect
15 stations (PS, SPS and LHC)

– AFNOR analysis for all circuits on a weekly basis.

– Installation of continuous measurements of residual levels of
chemicals in all circuits concerned.
– Preventive shock treatment (monthly) for the SPS and LHC showing
low bacteria count (1000 < UFC/l < 10000)
– Additional programme of weekly inspection rounds

2. Estimated cost and implementation time-scale

– 410 kCHF
– 10-12 weeks for installation and commissioning of all equipment
3
Stand-by cooling plant for
maintenance periods
• No room in existing SF plants to house
the additional equipment needed (some
150 -200 m2 required)
•heat exchanger (2) foot print around 8 m2
•Pumps (4) foot print around 3 m2 each
•Primary water filter around 4 m2
•Electrical and control around 8 m2
•Water treatment area for new tower 10 m2
•Large diameter piping and accessories

• New building must be located next to

existing SF to reduce interconnecting
piping,
• Concrete building necessary for noise
reasons.
• Prefabricated cooling tower on 4
building roof

draining and cleaning
Stand-by cooling plant for
maintenance periods
1. Proposal:
– Close primary circuit to reduce its volume and allow complete draining
– Install smaller cooling tower and primary pumps sized for cryo only with decoupling heat exchanger
– Extension to existing bldg. necessary

2. Estimated cost and implementation time-scale:

– CE bldg. (15 m * 15 m * 6 m, ~ 6000 CHF/m2) 1200 kCHF
– Pumping station (PHE, pumps, piping, electrical, PLC) 900 kCHF
– Prefab cooling towers 300 kCHF
Estimated Total per LHC point ~ 2400 kCHF

Installation time CE ~ 5-6 months

Installation time CV ~ 3-4 months
Total installation time per LHC point ~ 8-10 months
of which 1 month stop of existing circuits required

Resources necessary (4 LHC points) ~ 2 FTE CE + 3 FTE CV

Estimated additional power requirements per point ~ 400 kW

Conclusions
• Compensatory measures for 2009-2010 quick to
implement. No contract amendment necessaries,

• Redundancy for cryo involves major works. CE would

need to organize its tendering (4-6 months at best) to fit
one of the 4 Finance Committees (Mar. Jun. Sept. Dec.),

• CV could organize its tendering in the shadow of CE

tendering and construction. CV works require 1 month of
stop of cryo in any event (modification of existing
circuits).
