What is a
wave?
What are the 3
types of waves?
1.Transverse waves
2.Longitudinal waves
3.Surface waves
Now who can distinguish
transverse from
longitudinal waves?
In transverse waves particles
move perpendicular to the motion
of the wave. While in longitudinal
waves particles move parallel to
the motion of the wave.
At the end of the lesson, the learner should be
able to:
a. distinguish mechanical waves from
electromagnetic waves;
b. conduct a simple experiment to observe
mechanical and electromagnetic waves; and
c. develop appreciation for the importance of
understanding waves in daily life.
How do sound
reach our ears?
Sound waves travel through air
as longitudinal waves and
create regions of varying
pressure. These waves
propagate through the air until
they reach our ears.
What about the light
waves coming from
the sun? How do they
reach earth?
Waves of solar energy radiate,
or spread out, from the Sun
and travel at the speed of
light through the vacuum of
space as electromagnetic
radiation
Now I will divide you into 4 group
groups. You will perform Activity 3 on
Mechanical vs. Electromagnetic
Waves. Each group should have 1
representative to present your
collaborative work in front.
Time is up!
When you created wave using a
rope, you were able to observe a
moving pattern. In this case, the
medium of wave
propagation
is the rope.
1. When you created a wave
using a basin filled with water.

Q1. What is the medium of the wave propagation?

2. When you created a wave
using a slinky string.

Q2. What is the medium of the wave

propagation?
Q3. What do you think is
the source of earthquake?

Q4. What is the medium

of propagation of earth
quake waves?
1. Gamma Rays

2. X-rays ___________

3. Ultra violet ___________

4. Visible Lights __________

5. Infrared ___________

6. Microwaves ___________

7. Radio Waves ___________

1. Gamma Rays

2. X-rays

3. Ultra violet

4. Visible Lights

5. Infrared

6. Microwaves

7. Radio Waves
. Describe the
relationship between
frequency and
Wavelength of each
electromagnetic wave.
The shorter the wavelength,
the higher the frequency.
Hence, frequency and
wavelength are inversely
proportional to each other.
Based on your
understanding what
is mechanical wave?
The waves that you have
created in Activity A. all
require a medium for wave
propagation. They are called
mechanical waves.
Mechanical waves are
waves that travel
through some forms of
matter to carry their
energy.
The matter that
carries a wave is
called medium.
Medium can be
Solid Liquid Gas
Rocks, rope,
strings, sooil. Water, oil air
Mechanical wave can be
either transverse or
longitudinal wave.
Examples
1. sound waves
2. water waves
3. seismic waves
4. ropes and strings
Now what is
electromagnetic
waves?
On the other hand, electromagnetic
waves does not require a medium to
Propagate; it can travel through the
vacuum of space. It can move as
transverse wave.
Examples.
1. gamma rays
2. x-rays
3. ultraviolet rays
4. visible lights
5. infrared
6. microwaves
7. radio waves
Why are ULTRA VIOLET
(UV) rays harmful to the
skin compared to visible
light?
UV waves are shorter than visible light
waves, so UV possesses more energy
than regular light. UV photons have
the right energies to cause chemical
changes. When UV light hits your skin,
the DNA in your skin cells can undergo
chemical change.
What is the difference
between mechanical waves
from electromagnetic wave
Mechanical wave requires a
medium to travel, while
electromagnetic wave can travel
through a vacuum of empty
space.
1. This type wave can propagate even
without the medium.

a. surface wave
b. water wave
c. mechanical wave
d. electromagnetic wave.
2. This type of wave requires a medium
to propagate.

a. surface wave
b. water wave
c. mechanical wave
d. electromagnetic wave
Write MW if it is an example of MECHANICAL WAVE and write
EW it is an example of ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVE.
3. Sound wave
4. ultra violet rays
5. microwaves
6. water waves
7. ropes and springs
8. infrared
9. radio waves
10. gamma rays
For your homework, you are task
to research the different
characteristics/ properties of
waves.
