Diagnostic Review
Warm Up
■ Without looking in your book, discuss what you
can remember from the article on Steve Jobs

■ Do you think annotating helped you to remember

better?

■ Discussion: Do you think that dropping out of

college helped Steve Jobs? Why? Which kinds of
people should/should not drop out of college?
Page 5 Questions – A/B
Lesson Aims
■ In this lesson, you will…

■ Practice skim reading (again)

■ Practice guessing the meaning of vocabulary

through context, and learn how/when it should
be done
Guessing Meaning of Words Through Context

■ Why do it?

– Makes reading faster

– More natural way of learning vocabulary (how
did you learn vocabulary in Darija?)
– You don’t NEED to understand every word in a
text
– Stopping interferes with overall understanding of
a text/story etc
– Helps with knowing when to use words
(dictionaries/translators don’t do this!)
Guessing Meaning of Words Through Context

■ Should we always do it?

■ When perfect understanding is important, no

■ Otherwise, generally, yes

Side Note: Learning Vocabulary While Reading

■ There are “levels” to knowing a word

1. Can you guess the meaning when taking a test?

2. Can you understand when you read it, but not if
you hear it?
3. Can you understand when you hear it, but can’t
think of the word when speaking?
4. Can you use it after thinking for a few seconds?
5. Do you need to translate it in your head?
6. Do you use it naturally without thinking?
Side Note: Learning Vocabulary While Reading

■ More exposure to words = stronger

understanding of a word

■ Encountering a word ~7 times in different

situations = (mostly) learning a word

■ Thus, when reading, even if you are reading

something where you THINK you know all the
vocabulary, you’re still learning words to a
“higher level”
Guessing Meaning – Pages 6-7
■ Guess the meaning of the bold words

■ Explain how you guessed the meaning (see:

example)
