How to Form Passive?
• Put the object of the active verb as the
subject of the passive verb
• By-phrase is often used in passive
sentences to indicate the agent
• However, the by-phrase is often omitted if
it is unimportant to know the agent
• The general form of passive:

BE + PAST PARTICIPLE
How to Use Passive?
• Passive forms can be used by any tenses
• The tense in the passive MUST STAY the same
• Examples:
Active: Mary helps the boy. (Simple Present)
Passive: The boy is helped by Mary.
Active: Mary didn’t help the boy. (Simple Past)
Passive: The boy wasn’t helped by Mary.
Active: Will Mary help the boy? (Future Tense)
Passive: Will the boy be helped by Mary?
More Examples
• Here are the other examples of passive sentences using
other tenses
Active: I haven’t painted my room. (Present Perfect)
Passive: My room hasn’t been painted.
Active: The mechanic is repairing my car. (Present Cont)
Passive: My car is being repaired by the mechanic.
Active: Mom had bought a new TV earlier. (Past Perfect)
Passive: A new TV had been bought earlier.
Active: Dad was reading newspaper. (Past Cont)
Passive: Newspaper was being read by dad.
