Childhood memories
• When I was young, it seemed that life was so
wonderful, a miracle. Oh it was beautiful,
magical.
And all the birds in the trees ……well they'd be
singing so happily, joyfully, playfully and
watching me.
But then they sent me away to teach me how
to be sensible, logical, responsible, practical.
And they showed me a world where I could be
so dependable, clinical, intellectual, cynical.
So what is sentence stress and connected speech?
It is a matter of the personal choice made by the speaker at the time of speaking (as opposed to word stress,
which is more or less fixed).
Assimilation
occurs when a consonant sound changes at the end of a word because it is affected by the sound which follows
it. Example:
ten pin bowling/ good morning
Elision
is the process whereby one word ends in a consonant and the next one starts in a consonant so we have a
consonant cluster. For ease of pronunciation one is missed out, commonly a /t/ or a /d/
old friend/ white label/ black collar

Strong and weak forms

involve a small number of words which have distinct stressed and unstressed forms of pronunciation.
Unstressed vowels weaken to the schwa /ə /.
a bottle of beer
I can swim
Liaison or intrusive sounds
is when an extra sound is introduced to “lubricate” the flow between one vowel and another.
India and Pakistan, two umbrellas, please be on time
Catenation (vowel linking)
Is when the final consonant of the previous word connects with the vowel beginning in the next word. Comes
about due to speed.
