What is special needs education?

• Special needs education is defined as an education designed to


facilitate the learning of individuals who require additional
support and adaptive pedagogical methods in order to participate
and meet learning objectives in an educational programme. (UIS-
UNESCO, n.d.)
• Special education has been regarded as “an attempt to
increase the fairness of universal public education for
exceptional learners” because there are “those with special
difficulties or extraordinary abilities in learning”
(Kauffman & Hallahan 2005).
• According to UNICEF, around 93 million children across
the globe are diagnosed with some kind of disability. And
approximately 50% of them skip some or all schooling or
education due to their disabilities or development delays.
Goal of special education

• The goal of special education is to support students with disabilities and


help them academically, socially, and emotionally. Special education
help children with special needs in receiving instructions and learning
experiences in tune with their learning disabilities and specific
individualities.
Two primary methods that used for identifying those who
have learning difficulties

• The discrepancy model • The response to intervention


model

The discrepancy model uses It focuses on student’s ability to


test to determine if a significant respond to intervention and

Types of students with special
needs

● Students with learning disabilities – are


disorders that affect the ability to
understand or use spoken/written
language, or direct attention.
● Students with hearing impairment –
hearing impairment may range from
mildly impaired to total deafness.
● Students with visual impairments –
students whose vision is severely
hampered or restricted.
● Students with physical impairments –
students include who require wheelchair,
canes, crutches, or other physical aids for
getting around.
Students with emotional struggle – those
who demonstrate an inability to build or
maintain satisfactory interpersonal
relationships, develop physical symptoms or
fear associated with personal inappropriate
types of behavior under normal
circumstances.
