DEMOGRAPHY

• Field in statistics that focuses on the human populations, with reference to

size and density.
• In the context of political science: statistical study to determine world
population, that can be used to identify specific phenomenon in geopolitics,
public administration, etc..
The changing perspective on technology and technological advancements and
the movement of international organizations has made the world a global civil
society.
Global Civil Society: Assemblage of groups operating across borders and
beyond the reach of governments.
Heywood, 2011: The idea of a global civil society was seen during the 90’s as
“a mosaic of new groups, organizations, and movements that started to appear,
which bought sought to challenge or resist what was seen as ‘corporate’
globalization and create articulate models of social, economic, and political
movement.”
GLOBAL DEMOGRAPHY

• The study of the issues and developments of the worldwide population .

• Focuses on the analysis of population trends and patterns across different
regions and countries, and their social, economic, and political implications.
DEMOGRAPHIC TRANSITION

• Model that describes the historical and ongoing changes in population

growth that occur as countries undergo economic and social development.
4 Stages of Transition
Pre-industrial stage: high birth and death rates; stable or slow-growing
population.
Transitional stage: decline in death rates and increase in birth rates; rapidly
growing population.
Industrial stage: decline in birth rates; slower population growth rate
Post-Industrial stage: both birth and death rates are low; stable or declining
population.
Ronald Lee (2003) : demography is currently in transition; the mortality rate
declined followed by fertility, causing population growth rates to accelerate
and then to slow down again.
Reasons why mortality rate is reduced: advancements in medicine and
improved nutrition.
Reasons why fertility rate is reduced: preference over child survival than
number of child births and raising children is more costly than the consumption
of goods.
