Factors to consider for Choosing the Landing
surface
1. Airport , field , road

2. Length of the Surface – Is it Long enough to Land & taekoff as well ? (60Kts-100ft/sec)
3. Condition of the Surface- too soft / has uneven surface

4. Obstacles – Is there any Obstacle that can jeperodize the safety of the A/C ?

5. Wind information – having a good idea where the winds are from. Some good detection tools
could be water bodies, smoke or during planning knowing the winds for the day

6. Means to find help – Is there some form of assistance I can get post landing for my situation?

7. Overshoot consideration
How to Conduct the Precautionary

1. Approach the the intended surface from the upwind side

2. Conduct the High pass

3. If the High Pass gives good enough reason to continue then


conduct the low pass

4. If the Low Pass gives enough reason to continue then proceed


on to flying the final circuit to land safely

 Obstacle clearance

 While selecting a field – green is good , brown is decent and


black is probably not a good idea .

 Radio calls – using the appropriate calls , PAN PAN or


MAYDAY . Depending on situation
