INDEX

• Objective
• Working principle
• Types of turbine
• Future scope
OBJECTIVE

• The objective of the project is to design a wind turbine to recapture wind energy
from vehicle on the highway.
• Wind energy is considered as the fastest growing clean energy source.
• However it limited by variable natural wind.
• Highways can provide a considerable amount of wind to drive a turbine due to high
vehicle traffic.
• The kinetic energy is unused.
.
• The research on wind pattern is used to determine the average velocity of wind
created by oncoming vehicle.
• The wind turbines are arranged to be placed on the median, therefore wind
from both of highway will be considered in design.
WHAT IS TURBINE
• A turbine is a mechanical device that converts
the energy of moving fluid (such as water,
steam, or air) into rotational mechanical
energy.
• Turbines are widely used in various
applications, including electricity generation,
propulsion systems, and mechanical drive
systems.
WORKING

• Whenever vehicle moves on both sides of highway, some pressurised air is

produced due to speed of vehicle.
• The pressurised air strike the blades of the vertical axis wind turbine and turbine
makes rotation.
• This rotation of turbine rotates the generator shaft and electrical energy is
produced by it.

.
TYPES OF TURBINE

Turbines are two types.

• Horizontal axis wind turbine
• Vertical axis wind turbine
.
Vertical axis wind turbine is of two types.
• Darrieus vertical axis wind turbine
• Savonious vertical axis wind turbine
DARRIEUS VERTICAL AXIS WIND TURBINE
.
• In terms of operation, Darrieus vert. Utilizes 'lift’aerodynamic force to rotate.
• By flowing around the structure, the wind creates a suction on the front side of
the turbine driving the wing to rotate.
• Because the shape of the wing, they don’t experience much drag.
• It creates high speed and low torque force.
DARRIEUS VERTICAL AXIS WIND TURBINE
SAVONIUS VERTICAL AXIS WIND TURBINE

• The savonius wind turbine uses cups, called as ‘scoops’ instead of blades to
capture wind power.
• When wind blows,it creates a positive force in scoops and it pushes the turbine
around.
• This turbine uses drag force to rotate.
• So it creates better torque and slow in speed.
.
SAVONIOUS VERTICAL-AXIS WIND TURBINE
FUTURE SCOPE

• Can produce upto 50% more electicity per year than convectional turbine.
• Generate electricity at much lower wind speed as low as 1.5 min per sec.
• Street lights can be lightened without any external energy resources.
