FOUNDATIONS AND
PRINCIPLES
Research has generated a knowledge base on how
learning occurs and is aided by teachers. Each
teacher must then translate this information into
personal teaching practices and procedures suitable
for group instruction, sensitive to the diversity in
the classroom, and durable enough to persist in the
school environment.
There are three types of knowledge related to
understanding diversity and learning :

Knowledge of learning

Knowledge of learning differencies

Knowledge of Self
Our Mission
Knowledge of Learning
This is the teacher's grasp of educational psychology — including
learning theories, cognitive development, and instructional
strategies. It encompasses an understanding of effective teaching
methodologies, classroom management techniques, and curriculum
design.

(a) Cognitive and Metacognitive Factors

(b) Motivational and Affective Factors

Developmental and Social Factors

(c)
(d) Individual Differences
Cognitive and Metacognitive
Factors

Learning is most effective when students can connect new

information with previous experience. As students encounter
new information, they must be able to link it to what they
already know. If new knowledge is not integrated with prior
knowledge and understanding, it will not be remembered,
used, or integrated into new learning situations.
Motivational and Affective Factors

Motivational and Affective Factors Motivation affects both what

is learned and how much is learned. Without coercion and
sometimes even with coercion- we cannot make someone learn.

Motivational to learn is also affected by the degree of

difference new learning and prior learning or experience.
Development and Social Factors

Learning is influenced by each student's physical,

intellectual, emotional, and social development. It is also
influenced by social interactions, interpersonal relations,
and communication with others.
Knowledge of Learning Differences
Knowledge of learning differences comes from being aware of the sources of
differences between students, understanding how these differences affect
learning, and recognizing how learning differences sometimes result in
learning difficulties.

• Life experiences
• Emotional needs
• Developmental and social factors
• Life situations
Individual Differences Factors

Each student brings a different set of life experiences to the task of learning. These
experiences, along with social, cultural, and linguistic background, will influence
how a particular student goes about learning.
Knowledge of Self
Knowledge of self is based on knowing how our
personal learning experiences influence how we
teach. It means being aware of how aspects of our
individual identities- our cultural background, life
experiences,beliefs, and values influence our
views of learning and teaching.
How Do We Acquire Knowledge of Self?

Knowledge of self is acquired through reflection about personal

beliefs, personal history, personal experiences (especially in
school), personal biases, and past actions based on these beliefs
and experiences. All these elements form our personal identity.

How Can Our Personal Identity Affect Our Teaching?

Personal characteristics, experiences, and biases can influence teaching in

positive and negative ways. Whether they are aware of it or not, teachers
bring to instruction ‘’their own experiences based on race, class, gender,
and culture, and these are both a resource and liability in relating to
students.
Direction: Create a mind mapping about what u have learn and draw it in a long
bond paper to be pass next meeting.
