ACTIVITY 1:
Oxygen gas inside a 589
mL gas tank has a pressure of
0.89 atm. How much volume
would it take to get a final
pressure of 0.25 atm. In liters.

WHAT IS CHARLES’ LAW?
WHAT IS CHARLES’ LAW?
Charles’ law explains the relationship
between volume and temperature of
gases at a constant pressure.
The temperature increases as the
volume also increases. They are
directly proportional to each other.
Formula:

V1 / T1 = V2 /
T2

What did you observe from the ice
wrapper when you place it in a cup
with a cold water?
The gas inside the
ice wrapper gets
cold and the ice
wrapper shrinks.
How about when you place it in a
cup of hot water?
The gas inside the
ice wrapper gets
hot and the ice
wrapper expands.
How is the volume of the trapped
air inside the ice wrapper affected
by the change in temperature of
the water?
SOLVE THE FOLLOWING:
A gas occupies a volume of 600 cm3 at 0°C
and 780 mm Hg. What volume will it occupy
at 80°C and 780 mm Hg?
QUIZ
Direction: Answer the problem
being posted in the monitor in a ¼
sheet of paper.
1. A tank (not rigid) contains 2.3L
of helium gas at 25 °C. What will be
the volume of the tank after heating
it and its content to 40 °C
temperature at constant pressure?
2. What is Charles’ Law?
Answer key!
1)Given: V1 = 2.3 L, T1 = 25 °C, T2 = 40 °C
Find: V2
Formula: V1/T1 = V2/T2
Solution: V2 = V1 x T2 / T1
V2 = (2.3 L) x (40 °C
+ 273)
(25 °C + 273)
V2 = (2.3 L) x (313 K)
(298k)
2) Charles’ Law explains the
relationship between volume and
pressure where the volume of a gases
is directly proportional to the
temperature of gases.
