BASIC RULES IN BASKETBALL

Dr. James Naismith invented the game of


basketball in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1891.
The objective of today's game stems directly from
Naismith's original rules that are based around
shooting a ball through a metal hoop suspended
above the ground, which is called a basket.

1st rule: Only five players per team on


the court. In the NBA, WNBA, and NCAA
basketball, each team can play a
maximum number of five players on the
court.

Role and Position of the 5 Players


Point Guard (PG):
Role: Often considered the team's primary ball-handler and
playmaker. They are responsible for setting up plays,
distributing the ball, and directing the team's offense.

Shooting Guard (SG):


Role: Typically the team's best perimeter shooter. They are
often relied upon for scoring, both through jump shots and
drives to the basket.

Small Forward (SF):


Role: A versatile player who can score both inside and outside. They often
contribute in multiple areas, including scoring, rebounding, and defense.

Power Forward (PF):


Role: Generally a strong and physical player who plays close to the basket.
They are responsible for rebounding, scoring inside, and often defending
the opposing team's big men.

Center (C):
Role: The tallest player on the team, typically responsible for scoring near
the basket, rebounding, and protecting the rim on defense.
