The Dumagats tribe in Luzon

ORIGIN
• live in a remote mountainous region on the
Northern island of Luzon.
• renowned for their love of tranquility, kinship
with their land, appreciation of nature, and
reverence for their ancestors.
• observed in the slopes and mountains of
Quezon, Bulacan, Rizal and Laguna provinces.
• traced from Negrito's, one of the earliest tenant
in the Philippines.
"Dumagat"
• derived from the word "rumakat",
"lumakat" or "lumakad".
• implies the movement of early
Negritos by walking in land and not
by the sea.
• literally means "sea-faring" or "from
the sea" in Philippine languages.
DUMAGATS
• nomadic individuals
• no sustainable living
• they live for sometime in a place
• construct their tempory house
• after the sources depleted, they move in another
place to gather again food in the wild
• they get their food from natural resources
around them through hunting and collecting
crops in the wild
• they don't know how to cultivate soil for multi-
cropping
Dumagats of Gabaldon,
Nueva Ecija
• 255 individual of Gabaldon Valley
are dependent upon rattan collection.
• rattan are accumulated in Dupinga
watershed is derived from natural
resources as of now.
• their community has the highest
forest dependency and most
prominent knowledge.
• their best way to manage cultured in
the forest is to organise two or three
smaller management groups.

CULTURE & BELIEF
• G-string for men and skirts wrap around
the body for women.
• contrast belief from person to person
• they have their own dialect
• When it comes to marriage Dumagat is just
having a little banquet and preaching to
their child. There is no ceremony in
Dumagat marriage the parent of the bride
and groom talk only and their child
instantly become married.
Dumagats
• The Dumagat worship the spirits of their ancestor or
Anitos; their rituals include dances and a depiction of
hunting movements. They have no formal leaders. The
males in their community only serves as consultants for
attribution purpose. Today the present time Dumagat
adapt the generation and become "civilized". They
abandon their tribal attire and wear clothes like the other
people o they will never be diff erent among the others.
Some of their beliefs is also abandon like their worship to
the Anitos will never be seen to them. They do seasonal
job for now such as corpa and charcoal making.
Dumagats
• Hunting is their main means of
subsistence. They use pointed sticks
called galud to kill birds, wild deer,
monkeys, and wild pig. Dumagat
exchange part of meat and some forest
product for starchy food and other
goods with nearby farmers. Their other
traditional means of livelihood are
farming and fishing.
