PHOTOSYNTHESIS
OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
1. Identify the parts of a chloroplast and the
internal structure of a leaf.
2. Describe how plants manufacture their own food.
3. Relate the importance of photosynthesis in the
ecosystem.
PHOTOSYNTHEQUIZ
Carbon Dioxide
-it is the gas being used by the plants
during photosynthesis

Oxygen
-it is the gas being released by the
plants after photosynthesis
Reactants Products
Water(H2O) Oxygen (O2)
Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Glucose (C6H12O6)
Energy (Sun)

Chlorophyll
H2O + CO2 Sunlight C6H12O6 + O2
Cuticle

-sealsthe leaves to prevent water from

escaping

Epidermis
-produce waxy coating
Stomata
-it is where the carbon dioxide enters and
oxygen exits

Guard Cells
-regulates the passage of water and gases
Palisade Mesophyll
-contains closely packed, long cylindrical cells
-facilitates maximum absorption of light

Spongy Mesophyll
-contains loosely packed, irregular
shape cells
VASCULAR BUNDLES

•Xylem
-transports water to other parts of
the plant
•Phloem
-transports sugar to other parts of
the plants after photosynthesis
. Chloroplast
-membrane bound organelle that acts as the
main site of photosynthesis
-where chlorophyll is contained

Chlorophyll
- the part of the plant that contains the green
pigment and absorbs the energy from the sun
Outer Membrane
-freely permeable to molecules

Inner Membrane
-selectively permeable to
molecules
Thylakoid
- membrane flattened disks

Grana
- thylakoids arranged in stacks
Stroma

-fluid that surrounds the thylakoids

Lamellae

-link between each stack of grana.

2 TYPES OF
REACTION

Light Dependent Reaction

-occurs in the thylakoid
-conversion of light energy to chemical
energy to produce ATP and NADPH
Light Independent Reaction
“CALVIN
CYCLE”
-occurs in the stroma
-synthesis of glucose
Group Activity:
SUMMARY
•The chemical reaction for photosynthesis is:
Water + CarbonDioxide Chlorophyll
Sunlight Glucose + Oxygen
•The internal structure of plant includes the stomata, cuticle,
epidermis, palisade layer, spongy layer, xylem and phloem.
•The chloroplast contain the chlorophyll which contains the green
pigment, inner membrane, outer membrane, stroma, thylakoid, stack
of grana, and the lamellae.
•The 2 reactions are: Light Dependent Reaction that breaks down
water to produce ATP and NADPH and a byproduct of oxygen which
then continues to Light Independent Reaction also known as Calvin
Cycle that converts carbon dioxide into sugar.

stay alive. We inhale what plants
exhale so let us thanks the plants
for every breath we take.”
