Energetics- endo and exo

Learning Objective: to know that chemical reactions are associated with

energy changes where the chemicals either lose energy to the
surroundings or gain energy from the surroundings

To know whether energy is lost or gained in a

chemical reaction.

To be able to give examples of exothermic and

endothermic reactions.

(Triple Award only) to draw and explain energy

level diagrams to represent endothermic and
exothermic changes
Exothermic reactions:
Energy from the chemicals (within their chemical bonds) is LOST to the
surroundings as heat. In this example, the water the chemicals are
dissolved in is regarded as the surroundings. The temperature of the
solution increases as chemical energy is lost from the reactants
Exothermic reactions- Examples:

These examples are always exothermic. There are lots of other exothermic
reactions, but we need to investigate temperature changes to find them.

Thermal decomposition reactions are where a compound breaks down on
heating to make simpler products. There is only 1 reactant making multiple
