Types of Reaction

Objectives:
6. Classify different types of reaction, including
neutralisation, combustion, displacement and
precipitation.
7. Make predictions about the products for standard
reactions, using word equations, balanced
molecular equations and ionic equations.
There are lots of different ways to
classify chemical reactions…
Come up with as many as you can!
Define your categories clearly.
Precipitation
Neutralisation

Combustion
Redox
Displacement
Decomposition
Synthesis

There are many correct ways to classify reactions, but these

are some of the useful groups we will use for now.
Some reactions can fall into more than one category!
Define these classifications in your group.
Reaction classifications
• Neutralisation – when an acid and a base react with each
other to form a neutral substance
• Combustion – the exothermic oxidation of a substance, a
type of redox reaction
• Displacement – when a more reactive element displaces a
less reactive element in a compound, a type of redox reaction
• Precipitation – the formation of a solid from two solutions
• Redox – reactions that involve the transfer of electrons from
one species to another
• Decomposition – the breakdown of a compound into its
elements or simpler compounds
• Synthesis – combining one or more elements or compounds
to make a larger compound.
Summarising Types of Reactions
For each of the categories of reaction, you need to be
able to:
• Give a definition where required
• Give a general word equation that summarises the
reaction
• Give a specific example using a balanced symbol
equation
• Highlight whether the reaction type involves
reduction and oxidation (Redox)

Neutralisation Metal & Acid Combustion
Definition: Metal + acid → salt + hydrogen Definition:
when an acid and a base react with each the exothermic oxidation of a substance, a
other to form a neutral substance Eg: Mg + 2 HCl → MgCl2 + H2 type of redox reaction

Acid + metal hydroxide → salt + water Burning elements

Eg: H2SO4 + 2 NaOH → Na2SO4 + 2 H2O Eg: S + O2 → SO2

reactions
Displacement
Acid + metal carbonate → salt + water +
Types of Definition:
when a more reactive element displaces a
carbon dioxide

Eg: 2 HNO3 + K2CO3 → 2 KNO3 + H2O +

Reaction less reactive element in a compound, a
type of redox reaction

CO2 Metal & metal compound

Precipitation
Definition: Eg: Zn + Pb(NO3)2 → Zn(NO3)2 + Pb
the formation of a solid from two solutions
