What is Photosynthesis?
• It is a chemical ,oxidation-reduction process
in which water is oxidised to form o2 and
co2 is reduced to form carbohydrate.
• Reduction of carbohydrate requires
assimilatory powers that is ATP and
NADPH+ H+.
• Production of assimilatory power occurs in
the presence of light.
• Reduction of co2 requires assimilatory
powers. Therefore two phases occurs during
photosynthesis.
Types of reaction in Photosynthesis
Two types of reaction occurs in photosynthesis
(i) Light dependent –It requires light energy to
generate assimilatory powers (ATP and
NADPH2).Also known as Photochemical
reaction. It occurs in thylakoid membrane
(ii)Light independent or Dark reaction –does
not require light energy directly but used
assimilatory power to fix co2.It occurs in
stroma.
