EARS AND

THE
SENSE OF
HEARING
LESSON 8
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the lesson, you should be able to
1. Identify the parts of the ears.
2. Describe the function of each part of
the ears.
3. Name some common ear ailments.
4. Give some ways of taking care of
the ears.
THE EARS - SENSE ORGANS
FOR HEARING
● Your ears are your
sense organs that
allow you to hear
sounds and locate
where these sounds
come from. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4Sli1dsCrA
THE EARS - SENSE ORGANS
FOR HEARING
● Vibrating objects like rulers,
rubber bands, and guitar strings
produce sound.
● Vibration is the back and forth
movement that creates the
sound you hear.
THE EARS - SENSE ORGANS
FOR HEARING

● Sounds may be pleasant or unpleasant.

For most people, the chirping of birds,
whistling, and playing soft music are
pleasant sounds while the honking of
cars, thunder, shouting, sirens, and
sounds from airplanes are unpleasant
sounds.
PARTS
OF THE
EARS
PARTS OF THE EARS
● Each ear has
three main
parts. They are
the outer ear,
middle ear,
and inner ear.
OUTER EAR ● The parts of outer ear are
pinna and the ear canal.

● The pinna acts like a

funnel that collects
sounds.
● The ear canal serves
as the passageway for
pinna
sounds to get to the
ear canal middle ear.
● The middle ear is connected to
MIDDLE EAR the back of the throat.
● It is composed of
hammer anvil
eardrum and the three
stirrup
tiny bones called the
hammer, anvil, and
stirrup.
● When the eardrum
eardrum vibrates, the three tiny
bones pick up the
vibrations and transmit
them to cochlea.
● The inner ear is composed of the
INNER EAR cochlea , auditory nerve , and the
semicircular canal.

semicircular ● The cochlea is shaped like the

canal shell of a snail. It contains a
liquid that changes the vibrations
to impulses.
● The auditory nerve sends
auditory
nerve impulses to the brain for
interpretation.
cochlea
● The semicircular canal serves
to help the body maintain
balance.
COMMON
AILMENTS
OF THE EARS

1. Deafness
2. Earache
3. Tinnitus
4. Otitis media
5. Impacted earwax
DEAFNESS ● is the inability to hear
● A deaf person cannot hear
entirely.
● A person who is only slightly
deaf uses hearing aid
instruments that increase the
volume of sounds.
EARACHE
● is an inflammation
inside the ear due to a
boil or excessive
cleaning
TINNITUS ● or ringing in the ears is a
sensation of noise in the ear

● Since it can be caused by

several factors , you need
to consult an ear doctor
to help you identify why
you have this sensation.
OTITIS ● or middle ear infection is a
swelling of the middle ear
MEDIA
● It is marked by pain,
fever, dizziness, and
hearing difficulty .
● A person with this ear
condition should see an
ear specialist.
IMPACTED ● is caused by dust that mixes

EARWAX with the earwax

Doctors recommend ear

drops to dissolve it.
CARING
FOR THE
EARS
How would you feel if you lose
your sense of hearing? To
prevent this from happening,
there are things you should do
and avoid doing.
What should you
do?

a clean cloth or with cotton buds.

do?
3. Keep the volume of your
radio, television, and other
sound devices low.
4. If you have hearing
problems, go to an ear
doctor for check up.
