POWER RESOURCES

BY
SHOAIB ASHFAQ
HYDRO ELECRTIC POWER
Site Requirements
• Huge mountains
• Huge storage
• Cool climatic mountainous areas with lesser loss through
evaporation

Mechanism used
• Water falls from high mountains
• Passed through narrow intake tunnels with increasing pressure
• Energy produced from movement of shaft
Advantages:
• Eco friendly
• low turning cost
• Renewable power source

Disadvantages:
• Huge initial cost
• Deforestation
• Population displacement
SOLAR POWER

Mechanism for production

Conversion of sunlight (heat energy) by using photovoltaic cells.

This is called solar thermal energy

250-300 sunny days have enough potential
Advantages:
• Safe to install
• Eco friendly

Disadvantages:
• Expansive to install
• Needs further advancements
• No production in night
WIND POWER

Mechanism
• Conversion of kinetic/motion energy of moving wind into
electric energy
• Electricity is produced on small or large scale depending
on the number of turbines
Advantages:
• Clean, environment-friendly
• Wind farms add to the scenic
beauty which can attract the
tourists

Disadvantages:
• Expensive to build
• Can kill birds thus damage
eco system
• Variable speed of wind
GEOTHERMAL POWER

Mechanism
• Heat energy of the earth can be used to generate
electricity.
• Hot water/steam is extracted by drilling, and is used to
move turbines in order to produce electricity.
Advantages:
• Renewable sources providing
constant power supply
• Widely spread areas
• Suitable for building power
plants

Disadvantages
• High cost
• Site-specific place
