Mini-Mental State Examination

Introduction

 The Mini Mental State Examination or Folstein test is a 30-point


questionnaire that is used in clinical and research setting to measure
cognitive impairment which includes problems with thinking,
communication, understanding and memory.
 It provides measures of orientation, short term memory, attention and
language.
 It takes 10-15 minutes to administer.

 Which year is this?  Which state we live in?


 What season it is?  What is the name of this country?
 What is todays date?  What is the name of this city?
 What is the Day of the week?  What is the name of this hospital?
 Which month is this?  What floor are we on?

Maximum score is 5 for each type

Registration
•The instructor names three unrelated objects clearly and slowly, then the instructor asks the
patient to repeat all three of them. The instructor repeats them until patient learns all of
them,if possible.
•The patient response is used for scoring.
•1 point for each correct answer
•Maximum score is 3
Attention and Calculation

 I would like you to count backward


 Subtract 7 from 100,then repeat from result
 Continue 5 times: 100 93 86 79 65
 Alternatives: Spell WORLD backwards.(D-L-R-O-W)
 Maximum score is 5
Recall
• Earlier I told you the names of three things.
• Can you tell me what those were?
• 1 point for each correct answer
• Maximum score is 3
Language

 Naming : Point to a pencil and ask the person to name this object(1 point).Do the
same thing with a wrist watch(1 point)
 Repetition : Ask the person to repeat the following. No, ifs ands , or buts(1
point).Allow only one trial
 3-stage command : Give the person a white blank piece of paper and ask them to
follow a three stage command. Take a paper in your hand , fold it in half and put it
on the floor. Score 1 for each stage
 Reading : Write CLOSE YOUR EYES in capital letters and show it to the person .
Ask him or her to read the message and do what it says( give 1 point if they
actually close their eyes)
Language

 Writing : Ask the person to write a sentence of their own choice on a blank
piece of paper. The sentence must contain a subject and a verb
 Maximum score is 1
 Copying : Ask the person to copy a pair of intersecting pentagons
 Maximum score is 1
Scoring and Interpretation

 The MMSE is scored on a scale of 0-30 with scores >24 interpreted as normal
cognitive status.
 Severe cognitive impairement:0-17
 Mild cognitive impairement: 18-23
 No cognitive impairement: 24-30
