TRANSACTIONAL ANALYSIS

The method used to analyze this process of transactions in communicating

with others is transactional analysis. It entails our awareness of how we feel,
think, and act when interacting with others.
TA identified three "ego states" in the human personality, each of which is a
full system of thought, feeling, and behavior from which we interact with one
another. Transactional analysis theory is built on the foundation of the Parent,
Adult, and Child ego states, as well as their interactions.
EGO STATE
Eric Berne defined an ego state as a consistent pattern of feeling and
experience directly related to a corresponding consistent pattern of
behavior. The concept of ego states to help explain how we are made
up, and how we relate to others was devised by Berne.
THREE DIFFENRENT KINDS OF EGO STATE
EGO STATE #1

PARENT EGO STATE

Parent ego state determines a set of feelings, thinking and behavior that have been
copied from parents and significant others. Parent ego state means nurturing,
critical, paternal/ maternal, judgmental, dictatorial, guiding, bossy
EGO STATE #2

ADULT EGO STATE

In this state, you evaluate the circumstance objectively and respond

without bias. When confronted with a scenario, an adult responds by:
Not dictating to others. Making decisions based on good judgement
rather than emotions.
EGO STATE #3

CHILD EGO STATE

The child ego state is a part of the personality that has been kept from childhood; it also
comprises all the impulses a person was born with. Playful, curious, emotive, creative,
humorous, inventive, and childlike are all characteristics of the child ego state.
IN OTHER WORDS

• Parent is our 'Taught' concept of life

• Child is our 'Felt' concept of life
• Adult is our 'Thought' concept of life
THREE DIFFERENT KINDS OF TRANSACTIONS
TRANSACTION #1

COMPLEMENTARY TRANSACTION

In a complementary transaction, the response goes

back from the receiving ego state to the sending ego
state. According to Dr. Berne, these transactions are
healthy and represent normal human interactions
TRANSACTION #2

CROSSED TRANSACTION

Basically, in a crossed transaction, two

interacting subjects address from different
ego states. A transaction is said to be
complementary when the person sending
the message gets the predicted response
from the other person. Therefore, it may be
difficult to maintain a communication with
this kind of transaction.
TRANSACTION #3

ULTERIOR TRANSACTION

Two messages are sent at the same time. An overt

or social level message is one of these. The other
is a covert or psychological communication.
Ulterior or hidden transactions occur when the
words seem to be coming from one ego state, but
in reality the words or behaviors are coming from
another. Ulterior transactions may be manipulative
and increase the risk of communication failure and
conflict.
ADVANTAGES

Transactional analysis is a strategy that aids in understanding the behavior of others in

order to improve communication. Understanding human behavior can aid in motivating,
guiding, and directing others. As a result, transactional analysis (TA) enhances interaction.
It can help us become more self-aware. It encourages self-reflection. It assists people in
finding more effective communication methods. It can assist in the elimination of unwanted
thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
DISADVANTAGES

For more or less reasonable reasons, this concept has been criticized.
The theory itself incurs certain risks. The simplification of
connection patterns is one of the more commonly encountered
concerns, which can: tend to focus on the analysis of the situation
(instead of concentrating on solving the problem)
