Design Methodology

where., Cd = Drainage coefficient

W18 = Traffic (MSA) J = Load transfer coefficient
Pi = Initial serviceability index Ec = Elastic modulus of concrete
Pt = Terminal serviceability index
S’c = Modulus of rupture of concrete
So = Overall standard deviation
Zr = Std normal deviate
D = Slab depth (inches)
k = Effective modulus of subgrade reaction

3
Effective modulus of subgrade reaction
 Estimates support from underlying layers
 Depends on
− Resilient modulus of subgrade

− Type of subbase

Elastic modulus of concrete

Modulus of rupture of concrete

 Typical range is 600 to 800 psi

12
Joint spacing
 Ratio of slab width to slab length <= 1.25
 Longitudinal joints usually coincide with lane edge
 Example – Longitudinal joint placed at 3.5m.
Maximum allowable Transverse joint spacing = 4.375m

Dowel bar design

 AASHTO recommends –
− Dowel diameter = slab thk * 1/8 inches
− Dowel spacing = 12 inches
− Dowel length = 18 inches
