• Analyzes how individuals respond to
unanticipated violations of social norms and
expectations.

• Predicts and explains the effects of


nonverbal behavior violations on
interpersonal communication.

TYPES OF EXPECTANCIES
• PREDICTIVE EXPECTATIONS: behaviors
we expect to see because they are the most
typical and vary across cultures.

• PRESCRIPTIVE EXPECTATIONS: beliefs


about what behaviors should be performed
and what is needed and desired.

VIOLATIONS
• Human interactions are influenced by expectations, which trigger
appraisal processes. It has expanded to nonverbal violations.

• Positive and negative violations lead to favorable outcomes.

 POSITIVE CONFIRMATION: When behavior is expected and performed by


a favorably regarded person.
 NEGATIVE CONFIRMATION: The behavior is expected but done by a
negatively regarded person.
 POSITIVE VIOLATION: A favorably regarded person does something
unexpected.
 NEGATIVE VIOLATION: A negatively regarded person violates 4
expectations.
APPLICATION OF EXPECTANCY VIOLATIONS THEORY (EVT)

• EVT can apply to both non-relational interaction and close relationship

CONCLUSION
Critique of the theory is the assumption
that expectancy violations are mostly
highly consequential acts, negative in
nature, and cause uncertainty to increase
between communicators.
