EEEN60422 - Zero carbon Built Infrastructure

LECTURER:

COURSEWORK ASSIGNMENT

This is an individual piece of work –

you may discuss, but you can’t share
work
The objective of this assignment is to estimate the likely energy demands of a
low rise office building and to devise appropriate strategies for the use of on
site renewables
The Brief:

For the office building shown in the figure:

1. Specify construction details for wall, floor,

ceiling and window elements so as to
minimise total fabric heat loss.
The Brief

WALL AND ROOF THICKNESSES ARE CAPPED

AT 200mm MAXIMUM EACH

Standard window size is 3.75m2

In your answer, clearly identify all materials

used and the source(s) of all relevant data
The Brief

2. Assuming a specific air leakage of

5m3hr-1m-2 @50Pa pressure difference,
calculate the overall total infiltration heat
loss from the building
The Brief

3. Calculate the ventilation energy

consumption due to the WC extraction fans
during the 210 day heating season and the
energy used by the fans during this period.
Also, calculate the fan energy consumption
outside the heating season.
The Brief

You may assume

o Fans operate for 6 hours per day each

during occupancy
The Brief

4. Using the values derived in steps 1, 2 and 3,

calculate the overall heat loss from the
building over a 210 day heating season.
The Brief

You may assume:

o Mean internal – external temperature of

16oC
o 14 hour period of operation, 5 days per
week
The Brief

5. Design a lighting system for the building and

thus calculate the electrical power used
during a year
The Brief
You may assume that

o Office lighting is used for an average of 3

hours per day over a year per day of
occupancy
o Lobbies are artificially lit for the duration of
the working day
o WCs are lit whenever extract fans are
running
The Brief

A FLOOR TO CEILING HEIGHT of 3 METRES

SHOULD NOT BE EXCEEDED ON EITHER FLOOR
The Brief

5. Estimate small power usage

Initially the office will house a total of 60
people.
Each will have a desktop PC and there will be
one laser printer per 10 people.
Each office will have a photocopier
Assume that this equipment is switched off out
of working hours
The Brief

The office also has a file server which is

switched on 24/7
The Brief

6. Calculate the total electricity consumption

for lighting, ventilation and small power
The Brief

7. Calculate

o Total primary energy needed for heating and

water production during the heating season
o Total primary energy needed for hot water
production outside the heating system
The Brief

In both cases, assume that gas is the primary

fuel
The Brief
8. On the basis of the figures derived in 6 and 7 ( and their
sub components)

a. Calculate the CO2 emissions per square metre per

annum
b. specify 2 on site renewables strategies that will

o Cut net CO2 emissions by 20%

o Make the building net zero CO2 emissions
The Brief

9. Write a discussion which summarises all the

assumptions you have made in making your
calculations and talk about the rationale
behind your 2 selections of renewables
packages
The Brief

Other information

The proposed building is in an urban area. On

the north east and west sides are other buildings
of a similar height, on the south side there is a
building that is three times taller.
Participation in any sort of district scheme is not
feasible
The Brief
Marking scheme

1. 20% 2. 5%
3. 5% 4. 10%
5. 15% 6. 5%
7. 10% 8. 20%
9. 5%
5% for quality of presentation, including
quality of referencing
