tourism industry.
• In Europe, geotourism began to gain popularity in the late 1990s, coinciding with
the rise of “backpacker tourism”.

Geoturism

Tourism
"Starting from Europe, the term 'geopark' emerged,
referring to a conservation area that protects unique, rare,
valuable, attractive, and significant geological heritage, as
well as biological and cultural diversity."
• Under the UNESCO network (as of 2023), Europe has already established 97 geoparks that serve
as primary attractions and destinations for geotourism.
• The Langkawi Island geopark in Malaysia has been officially recognized as the first geopark in
Southeast Asia under the UNESCO network since 2006.
• Indonesia itself only acquired its UGGp in September 2012, namely the Mount Batur Caldera
UGGp in Kintamani, Bali."
