Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe,
resilient and sustainable

• Settlement: a place, typically one which has previously been uninhibited, where people
establish a community.
• Inclusive: including all the services or items normally expected or required.
• Resilient: a) (of a person or animal) able to withstand or recover quickly from difficult
conditions.
b) (of a substance or object) able to recoil or spring back into shape
after bending, stretching, or being compressed.
Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe,
resilient and sustainable

• More than half the world’s population has been living in cities, and that share is projected
to rise to 60 percent by 2030.
• Cities and metropolitan contributing about 60 per cent of global GDP.
• They also account for about 70 per cent of global carbon emissions and over 60 per cent
of resource use.
• Rapid urbanization is resulting in a growing number of slum dwellers, inadequate and
overburdened infrastructure and services (such as waste collection and water and
sanitation systems, roads and transport)
• 150 countries have developed national urban plans, with almost half of them in the
implementation phase.

Relation of rapid urbanization and population
growth with adequate and affordable housing

• Urban population living in slums

- declined by 20 per cent between 2000 and 2014 (from 28 per cent to 23 per cent).
- Inclined again to 23.5 per cent in 2018.
• People living in slums or informal settlements grew to over 1 billion, with 80 per cent
attributed to three regions:
- Eastern and South- Eastern Asia (370 million),
- sub-Saharan Africa (238 million) and
- Central and Southern Asia (227 million).
An estimated 3 billion people will require adequate and affordable housing by 2030.

Ratio of land consumption rate to population
growth rate
LCR/PGR > 1:
• Land consumption is increasing faster than population growth. This suggests potentially
more efficient use of land or development that is not directly tied to population growth.
LCR/PGR = 1:
• Land consumption and population growth are at similar rates. This indicates a balanced
relationship between development and population.
LCR/PGR < 1:
• Population growth is outpacing land consumption. This could suggest denser urban
development, limitations on available land, or other factors affecting land use patterns.
