Understanding Cohesive Devices in Writing

Cohesive devices help establish links between ideas to make writing coherent. There are three main types of cohesive devices: logical connectors, lexical devices, and grammatical devices. Logical connectors include words like however, moreover, and consequently that connect ideas and show relationships. Lexical devices provide cohesion through reiteration and collocation of words. Grammatical devices involve conjunctions, transitions, prepositions, and subordinating conjunctions to join sentences and clauses. Together, these cohesive devices help writing flow smoothly from one idea to the next.
