Social Issues Grade: 12 Textbook: Upstream Proficiency- Express Publishing 1 Description of the class Level: advanced Students between 18 and 19 years old The class takes place from 11 to 12 oclock The students have an excellent knowledge of English and are willing to work; they are cooperating and must be involved in activities such as pair or group work because they are interested in communicating with each other. 2 Recent work The students have done listening comprehension exercises related to the subject of prejudice 3 Aims of the lesson To explain the meaning of words To express opinion on a given topic To suggest solutions for problems for 4 Materials The textbook, the blackboard, 5 Contents a) Warm up Estimated time 5 minutes Class organization whole class then individual Interaction T-S, S-S Activity organization The teacher writes the title Social Issues on the blackboard and asks students to example of such issues forming a spidergram. b) Activity nr.1 (Presentation) Estimated time 10 minutes Class organization: individual Interaction T-S, S-S Activity organization The teacher encourages students to express their opinions about some social issues such as grey power, unemployment, unemployment benefits, people power etc. The students are involved into the conversation as they express their opinions about the issues on both local and global level.

c) Activity nr.2 (Practice) Estimated time 10 minutes Class organization: pair work Interaction T-S, S-S Activity organization The students are asked to solve exercise 9 page 168 where they are supposed to use the words and concepts discussed in the previous activity filling in the gaps. They students are given 5 minutes to solve the task and when the time is over the teacher asks them to read the results . d) Activity nr.3 (Practice) Estimated time 10 minutes Class organization: pair work Interaction T-S, S-T Activity organization The teacher asks the students to express their opinions about social services providing food for the people with disabilities or for old people. The discussion lasts for 5 minutes, after that, the students are asked to do exercise 10 page 168 where they have to choose the right word to fill in a gapped text about such an organization that provides free meals for people in need. They are given 3 minutes to solve the task and when the time is over the teacher asks them to read the results .

e) Activity nr.3 (Production) Estimated time 13 minutes Class organization: group work Interaction T-S, S-T Activity organization The teacher asks students to form 3 groups. They are told to find 3 solutions to reduce unemployment and to argument them. They are given 7 minutes to do the task. While they are working, the teacher walks around the class monitoring. When the time is over the teacher asks a student from each group to express his/her opinions about unemployment. A short conversation is initialized. g) Round up Estimated time 2 minutes Interaction T-S Activity organization The teacher congratulates the students for the activities and gives them the homework consisting in an opinion essay with the title Solutions for Unemployment
