This standard sets out the requirements to prevent the drowning or near drowning of
persons when there is a risk of falling or slipping into a body of water or other liquid.

4.1
APPROPRIATE CONTROLS
Suitable flotation devices shall be available and correctly used. All users shall be
trained in the effective use of floatation devices;
If entry or the need to work above the body of water or other body of liquid is
necessary and acceptable as a result of risk assessment, then a safe and effective
means of exiting from the body of water or other liquid shall be provided;
Persons performing tasks where there is a risk of drowning or entrapment as a result
of a body of water or other liquid, the JHA shall specifically outline the method of
rescue and the person/s shall be assisted by an attendant who is trained, able to raise
the alarm and to initiate rescue procedures if so required;
Appropriate controls shall be taken to anticipate and to prevent any exposure to bodies
of liquids other than water that may be toxic or harmful to persons.
